With the effects of the recession still felt in the industry, Florida providers of home inspection services is now coming terms to the fact that they will have to comply with the state’s requirement of getting license.
The said requirement is part of a legislature that was approved two years ago and has a deadline set in the summer of 2010.
It would not matter whether an inspector already had 250 hours worth of training under his belt, paid the $200 licensing fee and had undergone a background check. No license will be available if they do not meet the state’s new regulations which include more training hours and actual inspections.
For professionals who have been in the business for a long time, the new regulation is welcome since it will effectively eliminate scammers who pretend that they are competent providers of home inspection services, particularly mold remediators.
Once the regulations are in effect, industry experts also believe that legitimate companies will no longer have to deal with unlicensed activities that have undercut prices of the inspection services as well as customer satisfaction.
On the other hand, some builders and inspectors are worried about the looming July 1 deadline and the very few information being provided by the state.
For instance, a lot of them are confused if they would need to obtain a separate inspection license if they already have a contractor license. There are no clear guidelines concerning the required qualifications.
In a workshop conducted by the state Department of Business and Professional Regulation, thousands of mold remediators, contractors and house inspectors revealed their frustration.
But the regulators are saying that they are unable thing to do much because of the lack of funding for the said program. Their main concern is to ensure the safety of the public.
In order to address the grievances of the inspectors, regulators are planning on a series of workshops that will involve making rules in order to minimize confusion.
At present, anyone can actually obtain a license and provide home inspection services even without any inspection experience or training.
